The City of Sète will extend paid parking in the city center from November 1st

De nouveaux horodateurs seront installés à partir du 21 octobre. Midi Libre – VINCENT ANDORRA

Monday, October 21, the installation of new parking meters, additional road markings and signage will begin in the city center, with a view to extending paid parking in Sète from November 1. The City explains.

From November 1, a very large part of the parking that was previously free in the city center of Sète will become paid. From Monday, October 21, Sète residents will notice the installation of new parking meters in the areas concerned, which include the Quatre Ponts district, the Rue Paul-Bousquet and police station sectors, the arteries adjoining the Quai d'Orient and the surroundings of the Décanale Saint-Louis. Signage and road markings will follow.

More than 700 places will move to the green zone

In concrete terms, the green zones (long-term) will expand significantly, from 1,404 to 2,100 places. The beaches will suffer the same fate, in a similar proportion (from 790 to 1,200 places), while the orange zone, less advantageous and of short duration, will expand less (from 684 to 738 places). The City of Sète is relying, to justify its choice, on the extension of paid parking at Victor-Hugo, "popular" and "with results, both for residents and businesses". On the surface, 250 spaces had been removed.

Increase revenue from €1.7 million to €2 million

Paid parking Paid parking areas in Sète currently represent an annual revenue of €1.7 million. “Of this sum, €1.2 million is paid to contribute to the construction of car parks, explains Vincent Sabatier. We also finance the maintenance of beaches, but also all the measures taken in favor of free transport, line 8, part of maritime transport, the reimbursement of subscriptions for non-taxable Sète residents…" With the extension of paid parking in Sète on November 1, this will be €300,000 more in revenue per year. “Enough to review the frequencies of free transport, reinvest in roads…”,suggests the municipal councillor, who also indicates the increase in the Post-Parking Package (FPS), raised from 25 to 35 euros (from 18 to 25 euros in the event of a reduction).

“If we are looking for rotation to promote commerce on busy roads and if we want to clear the streets of parking lot vehicles, this is the solution, argues Vincent Sabatier, municipal assistant for mobility/roads. It's a way for local residents to park closer to home and throughout the green zone."

A "disguised tax" at 18 € per month ?

The many residents of Sète affected by the extension of paid parking will have to dig into their pockets if they want to park near their homes and in all the spaces available in these new green zones. The price of the monthly resident subscription is currently set at 18 euros/car (maximum two vehicles/household), or 200 euros/year (42 euros/month for non-residents). While this new measure may not please everyone, Vincent Sabatier dismisses the unpopular nature of this decision. And refuses to hear talk of disguised tax.

“Anyway, there is already no more space everywhere in Sète! With this measure, we give ourselves the possibility of finding more space near our home. This measure is hard to bear, but it is for the good of everyone. It is a way of no longer being polluted by outside vehicles. It is certainly more expensive than when it is free. But it is still not much. We copy what works elsewhere. And we are putting ourselves in a position, in the long term, to do without cars…"

Contribute, in the long term, to soft mobility on the quays

Because that is the goal sought by the City: to free up the quays and, in the long term, facilitate soft mobility. “The only way to create cycle paths in Sète is to free up the quays, and therefore get rid of cars, maintains the municipal assistant. Knowing that the extension of the paying zone is temporary for 2025, but not structural, since we will reduce the number of spaces on the quays. Aristide-Briand will thus compensate for the loss of parking on the quays of Bosc, Régy or even Pasteur.” The fact remains that the Sète resident will have to dig into his pocket for this. "Certainly, but there is a purpose", justifies Vincent Sabatier.
