The National Rally vote in rural areas is not inevitable for former rebellious MP Sébastien Rome

The former MP for the 4th constituency of Hérault has analyzed the balance of electoral power. Above all, he makes his diagnosis.

Beaten but not defeated. At the beginning of July, the former rebellious deputy of the 4th constituency of Hérault Sébastien Rome had to give up his seat to his RN rival Manon Bouquin for 778 votes. “A gap not so significant in the context of the RN wave in the region”, he dissects, noting that he notably managed to capture some of the invalid votes of 2022, “a sign that the work was good”, he translates.

A month after the election, the former parliamentarian wants above all to read, in this election, that there is no inevitability in voting for the RN in rural areas. “This binary reading of spatial determinism that we often hear is wrong. In my constituency, I am in the lead in 66 out of 99 municipalities. In Hérault, we also see that small towns, central market towns with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants (Lodève, Ganges, Bédarieux, Clermont-l’Hérault…), put the left in the lead, which shows that the social mixing of towns, even small ones, tends to reduce the impact of the RN. On the other hand, they are surrounded by villages where the RN vote is stronger, even very strong, municipalities where one of the characteristics is urban sprawl,” he explains.

A more sociological vote

In other words, this vote would be more sociological than spatial. “Territories are becoming more specialized with a tendency to accommodate the same social categories, which reinforces political divisions. In these municipalities where housing developments have multiplied, the obligation to take the car for daily travel makes the chance encounter of the city and public transport impossible. This urban form also tends to reduce modes of sociability to invitations to each other's homes rather than to public places”. However, according to the former MP, this electorate is that of a middle class, “the one who works, who has invested in a better living environment, but who has difficulty making ends meet. So these people look a bit like a dog from a china shop at what is happening next door, telling themselves that the others are doing nothing and are treated better", continues Sébastien Rome, who also supports that "the geography of the constituencies acquired by the RN is superimposed on the map of the concentration of poverty, notably on the Mediterranean arc".

A series of measures

Refusing then this concept of France of towers against that of towns, "a cliché that validates the vision of the RN and accentuates what separates them", The professional teacher therefore proposes to take a new look at these territories “where a significant part of our country's sovereignty, food, energy, industrial, ecological…"is at stake…"In a long note published on his Mediapart blog, he even sets out a series of measures which, he says, would respond to the specific challenges of these areas. “Some very simple. For example, assistance with repairs following the technical inspection, the lack of mobility being a major obstacle to finding a job. But also, since the housing problem is major but invisible, allowing the State to acquire and renovate 1 million vacant homes. We should also launch a plan for crafts or small local businesses, strengthen childcare methods, create a universal right to employment, in line with the zero unemployment territories…", he lists.

Sébastien Rome would even be ready to carry these measures into a New Popular Front government. "I am available to advance these ideas. It was my political commitment before becoming an MP, it will be after…" Defeated but far from being defeated.
