The “Stop Carrefour Gambetta” collective is demonstrating this Saturday in front of the former Spar store in Montpellier

Le Tribunal de Commerce a choisi l’offre de Carrefour, au détriment de celle de la Cagette, pour reprendre l’ex-magasin Spar du cours Gambetta. Un collectif citoyen s’y oppose.

Following the closure of the Spar store on Cours Gambetta, the Commercial Court designated the Carrefour brand as the buyer, to the detriment of La Cagette. This citizen cooperative, with 5,000 members, which is cramped in its premises on Avenue Clemenceau, hoped to be able to expand by taking over the former Spar store.

“This choice to favor a large-scale retail brand, in the face of an alternative project recognized as being of comparable quality, shows once again how difficult it is for virtuous alternatives to develop in the face of the giants of for-profit retail”, communicated La Cagette following the decision of the Commercial Court.

In the process, an appeal to local stakeholders had been made launched: “Help us to remove the barriers that prevent La Cagette from growing”.

“An antisocial enterprise”

Since then, a citizens' collective has been formed. It is opposed to the presence of a new Carrefour supermarket in our neighborhood and wants to avoid a monopoly in the center of Montpellier.

This group believes that "Carrefour (is) an antisocial company (and) a group that supports colonization.

“Stop Carrefour Gambetta” will hold its first rally this Saturday, September 14 at 11 a.m. in front of the former Spar store, at 19 cours Gambetta.
