On May 1, 1994, Ayrton Senna died in a terrible accident on the Imola circuit during the San Marino Grand Prix, Italy. 30 years later, the emotion is still raw.

It has already been three decades since Formula 1 legend Ayrton Senna died in Bologna hospital. The Brazilian died in a tragic accident on the Imola circuit, while leading the race.

A deadly turn

On Sunday May 1, 1994, Ayrton Senna started from pole position for the San Marino Grand Prix. From the start, a collision between two cars leaves debris and causes the safety car to exit.

After a few laps, the race resumes. The Brazilian is first, followed by Michaël Schumacher. But on the sixth lap, Ayrton Senna lost control of his Williams and shot straight into the wall.

The impact is violent since the car crashes into the concrete wall at more than 200 km/h. At 6:30 p.m., the pilot was officially pronounced dead. This race weekend was full of emotions since Rubens Barrichello had a violent accident, injuring his arm, and Roland Ratzenberger also lost his life in a tragedy during the first days of the Grand Prix.

Great emotion

30 years after his death, Ayrton Senna remains a legend of motorsport. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton never failed to point out that the Brazilian driver was a role model for him. Many pilots and personalities paid tribute to him on this sad anniversary. Like his famous rival, Alain Prost.
