After suffocating under remarkably intense temperatures, the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is facing deadly rains. At least twenty-five people have been killed since Friday, March 22, 2024, during the passage of a violent storm which affected the southeast of the country. Check out the impressive images.

Rescue teams worked this Sunday March 24, 2024 in pouring rain to help victims of the violent storm and heavy rains which have been affecting since Friday March 22, 2024, southeastern Brazil, notably the states of Espirito Santo and Rio de Janeiro. The death toll rises to at least 25 deaths.

Two deaths recorded in Apiaca, in Espirito Santo, have raised the death toll to 17 deaths in this state, according to a press release from Civil Protection and Defense, cited by < strong>BFMTV.

A "chaotic situation"

The governor of this state, Renato Casagrande, described a "chaotic situation" in Mimoso do Sul, town of ;rsquo;around 25,000 inhabitants, where at least 15 people succumbed to the floods.

However, this Sunday, the water level dropped after a night with almost no rain, which allowed rescuers to reach previously inaccessible areas, said the governor on social networks.

Aerial images of Mimoso do Sul taken this Saturday and released by firefighters showed entire neighborhoods of the city under water, only the roofs were visible.

A balance sheet that climbs further

The storm killed eight people in the neighboring state of Rio de Janeiro between Friday and Saturday, most due to landslides in a mountainous region, according to authorities, reports < strong>South West.

The regional government confirmed four deaths in the collapse of a house and a small building in Petrópolis, a tourist town about 70 kilometers from the capital of the ;rsquo;State.

Other deaths occurred in Teresópolis, Santa Cruz da Serra and Arraial do Cabo, according to the local government. Public schools have been converted into shelters, according to an emergency committee set up by the local government and rescuers.

Strong wind gusts and intense rainfall also hit the coastline near São Paulo, where two children were injured and hospitalized on Friday.
