Montpellier Kevin Mayer, in search of Olympic qualification for the Paris Games three weeks before the deadline, launched his decathlon with a solid 100 m at the European Athletics Championships, Monday in Rome .

Mayer crossed the finish line in 10 sec 72 (wind: +0.4 m/s), more than two tenths from his personal best, in a series delayed by two false starts and won by another Frenchman, Makenson Gletty, in 10 sec 55, a new personal best.

924 points

His 100 m earned Mayer 924 points and placed him in provisional sixth position. The double world champion (2017 and 2022) and double Olympic silver medalist (2016 and 2021) approaches the Roman decathlon as his "last chance" qualification for the 2024 Olympics.

The Olympic minimums are set at 8,460 points. Mayer (32 years old) has not completed ten events in a decathlon since July 2022 in Eugene (United States), when he won his second world title.
