A car thief who stole a powerful sports car, a Lamborghini Huracan estimated at at least 250,000 euros; died while trying to escape a patrol, according to a long video made public on May 7 by the Los Angeles police. The events took place on April 6, in the San Fernando Valley, but the open investigation is still underway to retrace the path of the suspect, Elliott Dugan, a 52-year-old repeat offender.

Asleep at the wheel at a red light

The scene begins when a patrol is intrigued by this beautiful sports car which is stopped at a red light, but which does not start when the light turns green: the police officers approach and discover that the driver is asleep at the wheel. They then decide to check it, and very quickly realize that something is wrong: the car is reported stolen, and its driver is himself the subject of several arrest warrants.

But while the police ask him to get out of the car, the man suddenly steps on the accelerator and disappears in a flash. The patrol then sets off in pursuit and a few hundred meters further, on this straight avenue, they arrive at the scene of what is a terrible accident: several trees located on the central reservation have been destroyed. mowed down, and the carcass of the car, cut in two and on the roof, is a little further away.

Frightened, by the light of their torches, the police inspect the scene. "Where did he go ?" one of them asks. "Did anyone stop him ?" asks another on the radio. It will take several minutes before they discover the driver's body, several dozen meters from the remains of the car: ejected under the violence of the impact, he did not survive.

From the video surveillance images, the police were able to estimate the escape speed at the time of impact at 180 km:h.
