“We are at a crossroads”, believes Nadia El Okki, Renaissance candidate in the legislative elections in the 4th constituency of Gard

Nadia El Okki : “Je pense qu’il faut donner une dernière chance au “pôle centre”.” MIDI LIBRE – CHARLES LEDUC

The Cévennes candidate “prefers to choose the path of reason” and “thinks that this “centre pole” should be given one last chance. Interview.

On the evening of the European elections, did you see the dissolution coming ?

Not at all. We all remained questioning and, quickly, I projected myself towards the future by wondering what the new National Assembly would be like. With a lot of fears! Because I am convinced that there will be a before and after July 7th…

You are a local elected official but a candidate for the first time for the deputation. A hard decision to make…?

I thought that Philippe Ribot was going to be a candidate like in 2022 and I told him that we, “Renaissance-Ensemble”, would support him. But, as the municipal elections approached, he preferred to stay with the Saint-Privadens. Then, I was quickly approached. I thought about it because it is not a decision to be taken lightly. The challenge is immense. We know where we are; with two extreme poles. We are at a crossroads. The two men Jordan Bardella and Jean-Luc Mélenchon scare me. Being a candidate is going to be difficult, but I am doing this as an act of resistance. The French have a choice to make, which is enormous. But we are here because there have been thirty years of broken promises…

Isn't it difficult to defend Emmanuel Macron's record at the moment ? To make ourselves heard ?

Yes, it is hard to make ourselves heard, and hard to tell citizens to vote for us again. I think we need to give this "center pole" one last chance. And if it is given to Gabriel Attal, he will have no choice but to succeed.

Does being a local elected official (in Saint-Martin-de-Valgalgues, Editor's note) help you during this election campaign ?

I don't think it matters; it’s easy to see what’s happening around you. I think this election is national. That said, with my replacement Philippe Masson, who is a doctor in Pont-Saint-Esprit, we know the difficulties of the inhabitants of the constituency. I'm not chasing a mandate; If I'm not satisfied, I won't stay. Purchasing power and security are the most important topics. I will fight for what I see around me every day.

What are the values that you defend, that you carry ?

Doing politics today is not easy. I repeat, I defend the values of well-being for citizens. That’s the minimum! Being able to heat yourself, for example. And security. It’s not normal to be afraid when walking in the street. And I don't think France will do better with the program of Jean-Luc Mélenchon or Jordan Bardella. Not only will they not be able to keep their promises, but there will be a climate in the country where people will be against each other.

In 2022, Philippe Ribot was soundly beaten (in the first round with 21.58%). Clearly, what do you expect from this election?

In life, when we do something, it is to succeed. I remain in the idea that, whatever happens, I will be able to say that I resisted. But I obviously hope to be in the second round, and I hope for a Republican front as well as a boost from all the elected officials in the constituency who could position themselves against the extremes. Yes, there are difficulties in France, but I prefer to choose the path of reason.
