“What motivates us is that young coaches are taking over”: this week, the MHB and Canayer hosted the French coaches’ seminar

Maurice, Andjelkovic, Cojean… de nombreux grands noms ont écouté les paroles de Canayer. MHB

Patrice Canayer and the MHB hosted a seminar for professional coaches from the French championship in Montpellier this week. Between exchange and transmission.

Imagine the scene on a weekend morning, in the middle of the international break. Some coaches from the French championship present at the FDI Stadium to attend training led by one of the most respected technicians in the entire profession.

"They're all looking at you, so if you want to get a job next year…" The pressure put on one of his young goalkeepers is barely veiled by Patrice Canayer during a session with the few Montpellier Handball pros who have not gone to the selections as well as players from the training center.

Not only did Canayer let his peers observe him, but he also answered everyone's questions and detailed his guiding principles regarding one of the most practiced sports in the world. rsquo;Hexagon.

"I saw some ideas that I am going to modify in relation to my team and our ambitions"

"Patrice has been in high-level handball for 30 years, he’s someone who has a lot of experience and who is visionary, so it’s enriching. I saw certain ideas that I am going to modify in relation to my team and our ambitions, explains Danijel Andjelkovic (Toulouse) after the session.

Besides the Serbian, Grégory Cojean (Nantes), Franck Maurice (Dunkirk), Gilles Derot (Istres) and even the current coach of Egypt Juan Carlos Pastor were in the stands in the middle around fifty coaches present from Thursday to Saturday as part of the Trophée des continents. Three days of a seminar for professional coaches organized by the French Handball Federation with the group of coaches and training professionals, 7Master. All in immersion at Patrice Canayer's MHB.

"You have to be curious, open up to other disciplines"

"This is the first time that such a strong rapprochement with a club has taken place, explains Thierry Anti, president of 7Master. We usually do that at the Maison du handball. We want to put something in place to participate in the evolution of handball. Our role is to put forward our ideas, talk about the evolution of the role of coaches or the impact of the new rules."

To do this, Anti, Canayer and all these wonderful people have set up a program to cover as many subjects as possible, whether it be recruitment, analysis of opposing teams or even the crisis management.

With the help of all kinds of profiles such as Montpellier Hérault Rugby coach Patrice Collazo, football coach Thierry Laurey, general manager of the Lattes-Montpellier women's basketball team Olivier Ribotta, the skipper Geoffrey Morel or even Christian Assaf, vice-president of the Métropole.

"We have entered another era"

"We wanted to remind the youngest that you have to be curious, open up to other disciplines, which is extremely enriching. We place the sharing of experience as a key element in order to transmit our heritage, explains Anti.

"Thierry and I are the oldest coaches, continues Patrice Canayer. We have experienced the rise of professionalism. Today we have entered another era. What motivates us is that young coaches are taking over. We're here to support them, but now it's up to them to play."

"We were left to work for a long time. Now it’s a little more complicated"

D’especially since, in a sporting environment that is increasingly publicized, which handball no longer escapes, coaches are the first fuses to reverse bad dynamics.

"The coach probably no longer has a main place, but we must continue to fight. We were left to work for a long time. Now it’s a little more complicated", explains Anti, beaten in the final of the 2018 Champions League with Nantes by… Canayer.  The latter, however, warns: "Today’handball cannot be built without coaches. And we will be there to remind him if necessary.
