A couple captured a rare and emotional encounter with a sperm whale while sailing off the coast of Monaco. Giovanni Bona, a resident of the rock, recounted the extraordinary experience that occurred last Sunday during his boat trip with his partner.

On July 27, Giovanni and Emanuela were enjoying a boat trip when they were joined by a rather unexpected guest. Giovanni initially mistook the animal for“a piece of wood” according to Monaco-Matin, but quickly realized it was a sperm whale when he saw “this thing breathing”.

Out of nowhere

Out of nowhere, the sperm whale remained on the surface for 5 minutes, offering the couple a captivating natural spectacle that they fully enjoyed.

Okay that amazed by the encounter, Giovanni remained cautious and took care to follow some safety rules. “I stayed away so as not to bother him. I was afraid for him, because I know that some boats go very fast and can hit sperm whales and sometimes kill them”, he explained to our colleagues.

After 5 minutes on the surface, the sperm whale dove back into the depths, as it had come.
