The Court of Auditors published this Tuesday, April 30, the results of road radars for the year 2023. Numbering 4,661 on French roads, they bring in big revenues for the coffers of the country. State.

Two billion euros: this is the amount of revenue collected in 2023 thanks to road fines generated by speed cameras. A figure up 7% compared to the previous year according to a report from the Court of Auditors cited by our colleagues at Auto Moto this Tuesday, April 30.

131 additional radars in one year

If this figure is increasing, it is firstly because there are more radars. As of December 31, 2023, there were 4,661 radars on French roads, or 131 more than in 2022. It is construction site radars, which are movable, which are experiencing the strongest growth.

The radars also work better, even if they are still subject to degradation, especially during demonstrations, like last February during the farmers' angry movement. According to our colleagues at RMC, 91% of radars were operational last year.

The report from the Court of Auditors highlights that radars flash less (-3.7%) than in 2022, but the number of contravention notices sent is up 1.8%. With 16.8 million PV, 2023 is the second best year recorded, behind 2017.

Improve roads and repair damaged radars

All revenues are used first to improve the condition of the roads, develop projects related to road safety and finally repair damaged radars. In 2023, the State spent 47 million euros on radar maintenance.

A small amount compared to the 2 billion in revenue generated last year, a record which beats the previous score established in 2017, with 1.97 billion’ euros collected.

In detail for 2023, we know that fixed fines (paid on time) represented 747 million euros in revenue.
