After the results of the various French political parties in the European elections, nothing assures the victory of Emmanuel Macron and his movement on June 30 and July 7 . Indeed, the breakthrough of the National Rally on June 9 and the recent coalition of left-wing parties under the name of Popular Front open the possibility of several scenarios at the end of the race for seats.

What is a majority in the National Assembly?

To obtain an absolute majority in the National Assembly, you must win more than half of the deputies, that is to say a minimum of 289 seats. Today, Renaissance, the presidential party, only benefits from a relative majority. He is thus obliged to ally himself with other political parties to obtain sufficient votes to have his laws adopted within the Assembly.

Can Jordan Bardella become Prime Minister ?

If during the next legislative elections, the National Rally or the Popular Front win the most constituencies in the legislative elections, the President will have to appoint a Prime Minister who has the confidence of the majority of the Assembly. The President will then live with a Prime Minister from the winning party.

The last cohabitation took place from 1997 to 2002, between President Jacques Chirac from the RPR (right-wing party) and his socialist Prime Minister (left-wing party) Lionel Jospin. The latter then modified the electoral calendar by positioning the legislative elections just after the presidential election, allowing the newly elected President to obtain a majority in the National Assembly.

A new cohabitation would thus be unprecedented because it is a political configuration which has never occurred since the reversal of the electoral calendar.
