DECRYPTION. Legislative elections 2024: a very uncertain first round in the 1st constituency of Hérault

Between an incumbent who has become a Macronie executive and alliances who want to ride on the Europeans' scores, the first round is already full of issues in the first constituency of Hérault.
We will not replay the 2022 match between Patricia Mirallesand Julien Colet, in the 1st constituency of Hérault. The first will wear the colors of the presidential majority in a territory that it represents in the National Assembly since the legislative elections of 2017. The second paid the price for the distribution that took place in Paris between the members of the New Popular Front. Despite his score two years ago – in the lead in the first round then beaten by less than 2 000 votes – the former Nupes-LFI candidate did not obtain the nomination.
An environmentalist to support the New Popular Front
The 1st constituency returned to the environmentalists. And it is a returnee, familiar with the post, who will carry the hopes of the union of the left. "I didn't have to think for long, I went for it because the danger from the RN is very strong", confides Jean-Louis Roumégas. The former EELV MP (2012-2017) is back in the spotlight after years of a “forced rest but which has recharged me”, following his defeat in the 2017 legislative elections and then in the 2020 municipal elections. Will he be able to unite left-wing voters ?
2022 legislative elections: a reminder of the results
1st round – Julien Colet (Nupes) 26.94%/Patricia Miralles (Ensemble) 24.83%
2nd round – Patricia Miralles (Ensemble) 52.55%/Julien Colet (Nupes) 47.45%
On this side of the political spectrum, he will have to deal with Morgane Lachiver, candidate for the Workers' Struggle, already present in 2017 and 2022 and who"has no confidence in the union of the left to speak out for the workers, especially when they invest François Hollande !". But also with another environmentalist candidacy, less expected. "I, who supported Glucksmann in the European elections, could not bring myself to vote for a Popular Front which includes the NPA and could push Mélenchon for the post of Prime Minister", confides Stéphanie Lévy. For her first campaign, she hopes "to propose a center-left ecological alternative", and will display the label Positive Ecology and Territories, the movement led in particular by the former Minister of the Environment Corinne Lepage.
The RN stronger with "Les amis d’Éric Ciotti" ?
In 2022, the counting of the first round gave rise to a stifling back-and-forth between the presidential majority, the Nupes and the National Rally. The RN finally finished in third position with 20.58% of the votes. This Sunday, June 30, Marine Le Pen's party will undoubtedly be able to rely on the dynamics of European women. Jordan Bardella obtained more than 30% of the votes in this first Hérault constituency which includes part of the coast, far ahead of his competitors. But no more France Jamet, recently re-elected MEP, to run.
The RN chose to dedicate this constituency to its new allies, the Republicans who remained loyal to Éric Ciotti. The alliance "of the right-wing people desired by many LR activists", says the main person concerned, will be embodied by Josyan Oliva, thirty-year-old based in Lattes and involved for many years with Les Républicains. On June 30, he will have his first vote as a candidate. And will face him another LR – official or dissident, depending on the point of view – in the person of Éric Chaveroche. The former president of Medef and candidate for municipal elections in Saint-Jean-de-Védas in 2020 was dubbed by the National Investiture Commission, hostile to Ciotti.
Finally, Alexandre Arguel, the brand new first federal of Reconquête!, will remain faithful to the line of Éric Zemmour. Candidate in 2022 in the 4th constituency, he completes the contenders in the 1st constituency of Hérault.
Never two without three for Patricia Miralles ?
The outgoing deputy. Not sure that the presidential wave will be as buoyant as in 2017 for the current Secretary of State for Veterans and Remembrance. However, Patricia Miralles said she was ready to return to the front to keep her position as deputy, during her campaign launch. The Renaissance candidate assumes the record of the majority, and intends to “defend the candidacy of the Republican camp against the extremists”. She will be able to count on her substitute, Philippe Sorez, who has represented her in the Assembly since her appointment to the government in July 2022.
