Nearly 600 people marched in the street in Millau against the far right

This first demonstration against the extreme right brought together several generations in the street in Millau this Friday evening.
"Tonight, I'm here because I'm angry." Strong words of a young man who, in front of the sub-prefecture of Millau, on the microphone, explains his presence at the rally against the extreme right which took place this Friday evening.

After him, Pauline, a young woman, also speaks. "We often hear 'we’have never tried the extreme right, we should try'. We have already tested: Vichy is the example, with its authoritarian Petainist regime!" A history lesson followed by’ a call for votes "to win" next June 30th and July 7th.

Youth present, but not enough?
Present in the ranks of the demonstration, the youth did not stand out in terms of their numbers. "I am surprised to see so few young people, wonders Régis, who came with his two children. D& ;rsquo;usually, it's them who annoy the National Front, but here it's more the forty-year-olds…".

Same observation with Luna, in first grade, who would have liked to see more young people her age. "Even if we are not old enough to vote, many things that are happening now will affect us in a few years", picks up her friend, Coline, also first.

New faces, families
The demonstration organized by "citizens, left-wing parties, unions, associations and other collectives" has brought together nearly 600 people. Arriving first at the Place de La Capelle, the procession then headed towards Mandarous. "Siamo tutti antifascisti !" , chanted, among others, the demonstrators.

Alongside these new faces, not necessarily used to gatherings in the street, families. Ghislain was there with his children to show his opposition to far-right ideas. "It’s reassuring to see that there is a union on the left with this Popular Front, explains the father. I was in Paris in 2002 and today there is a lot of apprehension and misunderstanding." < /em>He has lived in the countryside for around ten years. "We can see where this vote comes from, but I don't understand why the people are turning to a racist and xenophobic party."
Hence also, the interest in raising awareness among your children, "without exploiting them, these are just universal values, not partisan" ;, he assures. The question of education has also made its way through the procession. "What world we are leaving to our children ?", s’asks a mother of family.
Waiting for a candidate on the left
As for education, Michel Rhin, Nupes candidate in 2022, came first in the first round and a teacher knows it. He was the first to speak. But not the shadow of the future candidate of the New Popular Front in the streets of Millau this Friday. "We're waiting for the white smoke", indicated people close to the Socialist Party. The choice has not yet been made even if the clock is ticking and the application must be submitted to the sub-prefecture this Sunday at the latest. Perhaps the demonstrators present this Saturday will be able to support an official candidate.
