The 34th edition of the Nîmes Flamenco festival began this Wednesday evening at the Bernadette-Lafont theater, with "La Materia" by the dancer Olga Pericet.

The Nîmes Flamenco festival changes era with a new direction, but does not change its tune, always faithful to the spirit of adventure, even if it means disorienting certain aficionados… This Wednesday, at the Bernadette-Lafont theater, dancer Olga Pericet opened the 34th edition with "La Materia", the second part of a cycle around the luthier Antonio Torres, founding father of the modern Spanish guitar. The main thread is sometimes vague and the show a little disjointed, but several beautiful moments illuminate this performance.

Olga Pericet deploys her poetry with intensity and sobriety, directing the contemporary dancer Daniel Abreu, by turns wild beast, dervish or charmer for duets where complicit bodies and in osmosis indulge, between sensuality and provocation, seduction and avoidance. The two play with the codes of their disciplines, to move towards each other.

In complicity with Daniel Abreu

The guitar, object of the show, appears at several moments in its woody materiality, a simple board at first, then giving scale to Daniel Abreu or elegance to the silhouette of the dancer. Above all, it takes on a multitude of colors in the hands of José Manuel León, in turn flamenca, blues, folk, electric, Slavic or Cuban.

This allows Olga Pericet and her dancer to travel through a wide variety of universes, always in a carnal way, until a hypnotic and stroboscopic trance on an industrial rhythm pushing the flamenco within its limits.

The festival continues this Thursday evening with one of its highlights, the concert of the sensation of the moment, the singer Israel Fernández.
